The Calgary Flames are one of two professional ice hockey teams in the NHL in the province of Alberta, the other team being the Edmonton Oilers. The team was founded in 1972 in Atlanta in 1972, where they played until 1980, when the team was moved to Calgary. In 1983 the city of Calgary finished the Flames current home, the Saddledome, which is home for all Calgary Flames tickets this year. The Saddledome was just recently bought by Scotiabank and is now known as the Scotiabank Saddledome. The Flames are known for their heated rivalries against the Edmonton Oilers, which was sparked in the 1980s, when the two teams were arguably the best two teams in the Western Conference of the decade. Oilers vs. Flames tickets remain one of the hottest Calgary Flames tickets for this season. More recently, the Flames have developed a fierce rivalry with the Vancouver Canucks, with the two teams often battling for divisional supremacy in the recent years. The Vancouver Canucks and the Calgary Flames face off in Calgary three times this year and Ticketrunner has Calgary Flames tickets for all three of the games!
The Flames developed into one of the strongest teams in the NHL in the mid to late 1980s. However, they were often overshadowed by the Edmonton Oilers dynasty, which won 5 Stanley cups from 1984 through 1990, due to having superstars and now hall of famers: Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Paul Coffey, among others. The Flames were able to make the Stanley cup finals twice in the 1980s (1986, and 1989) and to win the cup once, in 1989. The ticket for these Calgary Flames teams were their core group of young talented superstars. Among them included: Doug Gilmour, Mike Vernon and Theo Fleury. Two years removed from winning the Stanley Cup in 1989 the Flames went through one of the longest droughts in NHL history, with the team not winning another playoff series until 2004. In the late 90s the Calgary Flames were in big financial problems and if they had not sold enough Calgary Flames Tickets they risked relocation of the team. Luckily, they sold enough Flames tickets to ensure that this did not happen.
The 2004 Calgary Flames marked a big change in the direction in which the team was headed. New coach and general manager Darryl Sutter made several big moves during the 2003-2004 season. Arguably the biggest move being acquiring goaltender Miika Kiprusoff from the San Jose Sharks. This re-tooled group of Calgary Flames were able to go on a streak at the end of the season and finish in 6th place in the western conference, making the playoffs for the 1st time in 7 years. Unlike previous years the Flames sold out most of their games and Calgary Flames tickets become more scarce in the city.
In the playoffs the Flames faced off against the Vancouver Canucks in the 1st round. This was a hard fought series with the Flames and Canucks going the distance. It looked as though the Flames had the series sealed away in the 7th game, when Marcus Nasland of the Vancouver Canucks evened the score with just seconds left in the game, sending it into overtime. Luckily the Flames were able to win the game in overtime, igniting what is now known as the "RED Mile" on 17th ave. in Calgary. Calgary Flames playoff tickets become very hard to come by and people poured out onto the streets of 17th ave, shutting down all traffic with thousands of people partying in the street.
As the Flames Progressed into the Stanley Cup Finals through defeating the Detroit Red Wings and San Jose Sharks the crowds at the Red Mile increased to tens of thousands of people. You knew that the city of Calgary was fully behind this team when the Flames were able to sell out of Flames tickets to the Saddledome for the away games of the Stanley Cup Finals. The Saddledome showed the game on the Jumbotron as Flames fans poured into the stadium with their Calgary Flames tickets and watched their team play the Tampa Bay Lightning in Tampa. The Flames would eventually lose in the finals in 7 games, but the memory of this Stanley Cup Playoff Run still lives fresh in the minds of many Calgarians this day.
